I’m at http://rimuhosting.com and have the 96 MB VPS there. I run lighttpd. It’s been very very stable so far (been there for about two months). However, the RAM I have (96 MB) limits you to only about three or four fcgi processes, as each fcgi process takes up about 25. So I’m moving to a dedicated now.
I didn’t want to struggle with TextDrive’s proxy’ing. As far as I know, you have to proxy the requests from their Apache installation to your lighttpd installation. A VPS is much better, as it allows you to do whatever you want, plus you learn alot.
But anyway, take a look at rimu. They’re from New Zealand, afaik. If you go there tell them the guy that wanted more RAM for free recommended you :) They know who I am.. I begged for more RAM (for free). I don’t get any referall money so this isn’t about that.
There’s also asmallorange, people’ve been saying they’re good. But you have to consider which technology they’re using for their servers. There’s XEN, UML, and a few others. XEN is the newcomer and consensus seems to be that it’s also the fastest. Few hosts use XEN yet, rimu does. Keep us updated on where you’re moving :)

Yeah, the proxying sucks. But within a couple weeks their RailsBase is going to feature clustered, all-lighttpd servers. And it’s all automated, click a button and typo’s all set up. Another, Instiki2 is running.
Can you tell I’m really excited?! You ought to check it out ;)
I don’t really like VPS because the only reason I have a host is so they maintain the server. A VPS kinda nullifies that, IMHO.
jason
are you in china , or have you been to china? where in china?
Finally! Someone else who is having the same DreamHost woes that I am.
What kinds of problems are you running into with DreamHost? Is it just that their FCGI/Rails support isn’t what they claim it is?
You should come join the TextDrive crowd ;)
