PeepCode: REST Basics 19 comments

posted Monday, October 9, 2006 by topfunky

One of the most requested topics since PeepCode started has been REST. The new features in the current Rails trunk are amazing, but also very hard to understand!

I spent three weeks studying the Rails source and building a simple app that will be used for the Rails Podcast. It’s all explained in the newest PeepCode, and I also made a free cheatsheet:

Download free RESTful Rails cheatsheet

Buy Screencast

The screencast is over an hour long and is still only $9!

What People Are Saying About PeepCode

I don’t know how you keep doing it, but your peepcode series is phenomenal. Even though I’m mostly versed in the topics you have presented, I find that your unique way of tutoring/teaching allows me to learn even more. — Rails developer Bryan Liles

What a fantastic idea! I highly recommend this service – excellent quality, quite effective and reasonably priced. — blog.slicehost.com

Awesome job, and keep them coming. — Rails Core Member Scott Barron

    SUP? Nice…

  • I spent three weeks studying the Rails source

Thank god someone has done this. I felt I was quickly falling behind in my understanding of all the goodness of rails edge.

  • Another superb episode. A+++ would watch again!!!!111

Great Work! This whole REST thing is starting to make sense.

I added the cheatsheet to http://TechCheatSheets.com

  • Great job! I just finished watching it this morning, then I was able to create my first REST application. Thanks!!

What a pleasant surprise. I was very tempted to buy the first two screencasts, but this one has convinced me to take the plunge. I hope you sell a thousand copies of it.

You know, I just have to ask…. How in the world are you so productive? Are you GTD fan or something?

Congratulations – you seem to have killed Lulu.com!

Can’t wait to buy this one :)

Hey great work! This video is amazingly helpful. One question though, what web browser are you using in the video. Looks nice.

    Thanks again for the tutorial!

Thanks for the great comments and feedback!

I used the experimental Shiira and also Firefox with the web developer extension.

I purchased the thing, but lulu’s download system is not being kind to me. It keeps stopping at about 72MB. :(

Hopefully someday I’ll be able to watch.

If you’re having problems, send me an email and I’ll deliver it to you another way.

I’m building a system to replace Lulu which will be released later this fall.

It will be good if you can move from Lulu or at least offer another option. I just tried to buy a couple of screencasts and got stuck in an infinite loop on the shopping cart page with no error message. Live support had no idea and could not progress the sale. Now waiting for techincal support. There is always the worry they have double/triple charged you in these circumstances.

And I was looking forward to having a day of learning :-(...

  • I’ve been interested by the REST stuff since watching a video of DHH talking about it. This video showed me exactly what I wanted to know without lots of fluff! It takes a little bit of time to get your head into RESTful mode, but once your there, its bliss :-)

This is the first PeepCode video I’ve watched, I’m looking forward to see what else you come out with. Worth every penny!

  • Haha, like a Geek Paparazzi I got the scoop on what the next Peep Code screen cast is (hint: TDD)

  • Dylan Markow

I thought I knew all about REST, but after downloading and watching this, I’ve realized I didn’t know nearly as much as I thought I did. Great work!

This is my first PeepCode video too, but I’m definitely going to view the other ones. Worth every penny.

Hi, how about some subtitles for those peoples like me that don´t listen english very well?

  • topfunky

The Rails from Scratch series is now subtitled and we’re working on others.

We’ll also be releasing translations of some screencasts and PDF books in Spanish and French in the next few months.

  • Sam De Francesco

This is an awesome screencast, and worth every cent.

API’s have to be documented, so check out RAPIDoc. A Rails Api Documentation Generator.
